With excellent public transport at very reasonable prices and efficient car sharing, it makes sense to live without a car in Brussels.
Car sharing
Cambio https://www.cambio.be/en-bxl with a range of station near us. Cars must be returned to origin.
Car parking
Car parking (French: Stationnement) is a complex subject in Brussels, and the city devotes an extensive online section to it: https://www.brussels.be/parking (English version available on the header menu). Our neighbourhood is in the Brussels “Squares” green parking zone (see zone map).
No free parking: Blue Disks are no longer accepted! Street parking near the house is rarely a problem in daytime hours, but this changes after work and especially on weekend late afternoons. As in any major city: do not leave any attractive-looking objects visible in the car.
Highly advisable for residents is a Carte de Riverain (Resident parking card), visitor parking cards are also available online.
Short-term tickets can be bought online with one of the apps referenced on the site (4411 is most widely used), or with CC or bank cards – no cash – from local green ‘pay and display’ meter columns on pavements (the one closest to us is on the next corner downhill with code 040023). Payment by SMS is possible only for Belgian mobile subscriptions: send a text message to 4411 with the meter code followed by a space and the number plate of your vehicle – make sure you receive a confirmation SMS. To stop your parking session, send the letter Q by SMS to 4411.
Garages can be rented in some apartment blocks in the vicinity, watch out for bright orange ‘A LOUER’ signs (and high costs).
Speed limit
Most of central Brussels and our quarter have a speed limit of 30km/h.
