The city has a web site dedicated to the subject of propreté, cleanliness: https://www.bruxelles-proprete.be/en. Detailed information, where you can also print out your local garbage collection calendar: https://www.bruxelles-proprete.be/en/calendar-rubbish-bags
There are five (5!) different garbage bags, all of which must be bought from local (food) shops. Other bags will not be collected; putting out garbage at wrong times or with incorrect content may result in fines. Garbage must be in authorized sacks; exceptions apply for cardboard boxes and for bundled branches for garden waste. Bottles should go in a bottle bank. Details: www.sorting-guide.be
Collection in our quarter – you must put sacks on the pavement outside your house against your facade between 18:00 and 20:00 (otherwise, they may not be taken):
Mondays:
- white: general garbage
- blue: recycling – plastic bottles, metal (food) packaging, drink cartons
- yellow: paper and carton (large carton may be bundled without a bag)
- green: garden waste
- orange: food waste, preferably with the closed bag secured inside the little orange bin (protection against cats, dogs, birds, foxes etc.), which you need to recover later.
Thursdays:
- white only!
Chemical waste
Proxy Chimik is the monthly collection of small household chemical waste at collection points in the quarter. For most of us, it is normally on the last Tuesday of the month from 18:00 to 18:45 (!) on the corner of Av. de la Brabançonne/ Sq. Ambiorix. There are many exceptions to the date and other nearby collection points, check: https://www.bruxelles-proprete.be/en/proxy-chimik.
Bulk waste (Encombrants)
Easy and legal means of disposing bulk waste (old furniture etc.) exist, details: https://www.bruxelles-proprete.be/en/sorting#nid-34 => Bulky household waste.
A recurrently annoying habit is for people to just dump old objects on pavements. The city is becoming more alert and heavy fines are imposed. Fight against illegal dumping https://www.brussels.be/fight-against-illegal-dumping Citizens may report illegal dumping on https://fixmystreet.brussels/
